I’m Tony Medeiros, a Montreal-based writer, publisher and storyteller with a passion for pop culture, food, art, comics, entertainment, music and the wonderfully strange things that make everyday life interesting. For more than two decades, I have been writing, publishing and creating stories across a wide range of subjects, from restaurants and food culture to books, comics, movies, television, music, collectibles and the people behind the things we enjoy.
This website, TonyMedeiros.com, is my personal home on the web. It brings together my writing, ideas, observations and creative projects while connecting the different publishing worlds I have created over the years.
Building a Life Around Curiosity
I have never been particularly interested in staying inside one box. I like food, but I also like comics, books, movies, music, art and the many corners of popular culture that continue to capture my attention. That curiosity has shaped my writing and publishing, with the goal of looking at familiar subjects from a personal angle, finding the stories hiding behind them and sharing them with readers in a way that is informative, entertaining and unmistakably my own.
Sandbox World
I am the creator and publisher of Sandbox World, a long-running independent publication devoted to pop culture, entertainment, books, comics, animation, music, technology and the many corners of popular culture that continue to inspire me. Sandbox World grew from my belief that the internet could be more than a place to publish information; it could be a place to build a community around curiosity.
Over the years, Sandbox World has become an important part of my creative identity and a home for the subjects I have enjoyed exploring throughout my life. It has its own editorial identity while remaining part of the larger publishing world I have created.
MTL Resto Rap
Food is another major part of my work. I am the creator and publisher of MTL Resto Rap, a publication focused on Montreal restaurants, food culture and the people who make the city’s culinary community so interesting. My restaurant writing combines personal experience with storytelling, history and a genuine interest in the people behind the plate.
MTL Resto Rap also features contributions from Mike Cohen, who brings his own perspective and knowledge of Montreal’s restaurant community to the publication. Mike is a contributor, not a co-owner or publisher, and his work adds another voice to the publication’s ongoing coverage of the city’s food scene.
Grubbits
I am also the creator and publisher of Grubbits, where food, entertainment, culture and curiosity come together in a lighter, more playful environment. Grubbits gives me another place to explore food history, products, restaurants, nostalgia, unusual stories and the unexpected connections between the things we eat and the things we enjoy.
Dr. Robot and Giving Back
One of the creative projects I am particularly proud of came from an idea that combined comics, creativity and giving back. In 2004, I became the publisher and editor of Dr. Robot, a comic created as a fundraising project for the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The artwork was created by Canadian cartoonist Bernie Mireault, and the project was published under the X-Press Comics imprint.
An initial print run of 5,000 copies was prepared for sale in Montreal at $2 each. At the time, the project was expected to raise $13,000 for the hospital, and by the end of the fundraising effort the amount was approximately $15,000. The project used pictures rather than conventional written dialogue, allowing young readers to create their own stories while supporting the fundraising effort.
My charitable involvement also extended beyond Dr. Robot. Through my involvement with WWE, I participated in other charity initiatives that helped raise additional funds for charitable causes. Those experiences reinforced something I have always believed: creativity, entertainment and community can come together to do something meaningful.
More Than a Job
Writing and publishing have never felt like just a job to me. They have been a way of documenting the world around me and sharing the things that make me curious, make me laugh or remind me of being a kid. Restaurants, books, movies, comics and music are more than products or entertainment; they are part of our memories and our culture, and I have always had room for both the serious stories and the ones that simply make someone smile.
The Bigger Picture
Today, my work exists across several connected publishing properties, each with its own personality and purpose. TonyMedeiros.com is my personal home and the place where I bring my own voice and ideas together, while Sandbox World explores pop culture and entertainment, MTL Resto Rap focuses on Montreal restaurants and food culture, and Grubbits explores food, entertainment and the lighter side of the things I enjoy.
They are different publications, but they all come from the same place: my curiosity and my desire to share what I discover. Each has its own identity, while each remains connected to the creator and publisher who started it.
Still Curious
I have been doing this for a long time, but I still feel like I am getting started. There are still books to read, restaurants to visit, comics to discover, movies to watch, music to listen to, stories to tell and ideas that have not yet found their way onto a page. I believe the world is full of interesting stories if you are willing to look for them, and I intend to keep looking.
